How much water does your sprinkler system waste?

You might be surprised to hear that most people water their lawns too much. You often see sprinklers running before, during and after a rain storm, even if a storm is imminent within the next few hours.

Sprinkler systems are the best way to water, when used properly. Even with the use of rain sensors, most systems are not functioning efficiently. Rain sensors shut your system off when they reach the limit of rain they are set for ie:1/4”, these are re-active switches, shutting the system off, after rain has fallen. Most systems are set to go on every day or every other day from April-October, regardless of the weather. Sprinkler systems should support seasonal and daily changes based on local conditions. They should be used as a supplement to rainfall during hot, dry periods, not as a daily shot of water, whether the grass needs it or not.

We developed a ($50) solution that allows your existing sprinkler system to be automatically controlled by the local weather. Based on data from the weather center it can turn your system “Off” prior to the rain event occurring, even when it rains unexpectedly it will turn your system Off. This saves water (approx 25%) by not having to wait for your rain sensor to turn off your sprinklers. The system also supports (On/Off) control of your sprinklers from a smart phone, ipad etc. It replaces your rain sensor and adapts to daily and seasonal changes automatically. It can be controlled using a calendar (local or Google calendar) and saves money on your annual irrigation costs.

 For example, you can schedule your system go on 2 days per week in April, 3 days in May, 4 days in June, etc. If it rains on any of the scheduled days, the system automatically turns off, saving water and money.

The system works using a WIFI switch (WEMO) and script (IFTTT) that controls the switch. Your controller has a battery back up which maintains the program and time whenever the system loses power. Whenever the system is Off it will not run the irrigation valves. Using IFTTT you can tell the WEMO to turn OFF when the current conditions change to RAIN and turn ON when it is CLEAR or on specific dates/times.
